Good news, everyone! If you’re a big fan of online autions, chances are you’ll find the concept I’m about to discuss at least interesting, since it introduces a major twist to the tried-and-true formulas for online autions. You may not become a huge fan – or maybe you will – since there are a few key points that make it drastically different from regular auctions, but I think you’ll enjoy knowing about this novelty.
And “novelty” is indeed a great keyword for describing Bidray, altough the term “penny auctions” is probably more illustrative. Well, imagine an auction where you’re not only allowed to increment bids by a single cent, but actually required to do so. Sounds enticing, right? (at least from the buyer’s point of view). But there’s a catch: for every bid you place, you’ll be charged a fee of $1. Naturally, this is meant to stop people from making thousands of $0.01 bids, while making sure the price of the items remains low; also, the money generated from those fees is used to support the website’s operation as well as endorsing some charities – which you also get to choose.
There’s something rather interesting and refreshing about this concept, in the sense it’s aimed at preventing the standard kind of “bid wars” which people normally engage when an item is about to expire. Well, auctions’ time-tracking is also a little different in bidray: whenever someone makes a new bid over an expiring aution, the timer gets automatically extended – from 1 up to 20 minutes, depending on the item’s popularity. To sum it up, the traditional tricks and schemes that people usually try using to turn online auctions to their advantage really don’t apply here.
However, it doesn’t mean that Bidray isn’t a good place to find a great bargain – much the other way around. In fact, the first time I heard about this website was from a forum where some people kept claiming it’s the best thing that happened since eBay was created. I haven’t formed an actual opinion since I’m yet to use the website, but in all circumstance I think the underlying concent is quite ingenious and noteworthy. If someone reading this has some experience using bidray, I hope you’ll toast us with a little insight via comments!
