The Thriller SwanSong: RIP Michael Jackson

Friday, June 26th, 2009

It’s always a little shocking, to see cultural icons disappear – isn’t it? Arguably even more so, in an era such as our own, when it seems as though genuine icons are getting progressively scarcer. When I first heard Michael Jackson had died, the first thing I could think of was “wow, that’s huge”. There aren’t that many guys left alive, who distincly carved their image in our public mindsets like Michael Jackson did.

I think that in our modern days, there will unlikely be anyone like the now-deceased King of Pop, even though I’ve read somewhere that he used to say his younger sound Prince Michael II would someday take his place as the next King. Actually, I’ll be quite happy if such thing happens, but for now… best we can do is hold on to the dear memories, and let go of those that aren’t so important. Wherever you are, MJ… I honestly hope you find the peace you seem to need so desperately in life.

Business sense tingling: now is the time to act!

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Recession is old news. Soon enough, our economy will rebound from the depths which circumstance have cast it towards. This is why – in my opinion – this is the best time to start making plans that will allow us to ride the waves of prosperity, as soon as they come back. It may sound like a controversial thing to say, but I honestly think this is the right time to come up with a business model and work hard to make it happen, even if it requires getting some Business Loans. Most people will probably disagree with this kind of reasoning, but come on… in my way of seeing things, it makes more sense to apply for a business credit than a personal credit… which most people do anyway.

Granted, I don’t mean to propose that people should just mindlessly rush into debt – much the other way around. Simply put, it takes money to make money! And most up-and-coming entrepreneurs usually don’t have enough money to make their plans come true. So, if you have an idea for a business, one that you really believe in: don’t be afraid to follow your dreams, even if it involves getting in debt. Just remember that, given enough reasoning, risks can be minimized and kept on a tolerable level. Sometimes a little research can go a long way, and a little courage today can bring about quite a shiny future!

iPhone Hunters: the action-packed adventures!

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Well, I’m personally not a big fan of the iPhone (or Apple for that matter), but all the while I think this is a story worth telling. If nothing else, it’s a little victory in technology over thievery, as well as a practical demonstration of the actual usefulness provided through the “Find my iPhone” service. You can read the long story here, but it’s basically an enthusiast retelling of how a trio of out-of-town geeks managed to track down and retrieve a pilfered iPhone. The reason why this story is interesting is because it could very much happen to anyone of us; if your curiosity is piked, go ahead and enjoy it!

Dream vacations? Not as expensive as it may sound!

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

This is probably one of the unexpectedly pleasant side-effects of the on-going worldwide economic crisis we’re living through: it’s now possible to get things that would usually be too expensive, at a price that has deflated towards reasonably expensive. I think one of the best demonstrations of this principle one could hope to find is related to the travel industry; and it actually makes sense, if you think about it: given the widespread recession, one of the things most people are likely to cut back is luxury travels… which equates with the notion that such travels will tend to be less expensive.

I had already thought about that before, but just now I got my confirmation from browsing around the Accor Hotels website. I remember a few years ago I wanted to say in one of these hotels in Singapore, but the price was too heavy. Well, just now I was checking it online and it actually seems very reasonable. Besides, I found out that on-line bookings which get processed between 23-29 this month – for stays between July 10 and September 30 – will get discounts up to %60! In other words, that’s a dream vacation abroad for as little as (or perhaps even less money than) a vacation in one of the tried and true vacationing places in the U.S. of A. This just goes to show that every coin has two side, and even the recession can sometimes bring about positive side effects.

Killing several rabbits with one stone in Chicago!

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Like I told you before, I’m facing too much stress lately – and I feel like I really have to stand up and do something about it, before I’m dragged down into depression or something like that. So I’m thinking about taking a few days off and doing something that’s both pleasant and useful (at least from an aesthetic viewpoint); with that in mind, I’ll be checking out a laser hair removal Chicago clinic I’ve been referred to by some friends. Mostly because I have to visit Chicago this week, and also because it will help me do away with stress… and also with a bunch of unwanted hairs on my back! Talk about killing a bunch of rabbits with one stone, right?

Have you ever thought of stress as a modern day epidemic?

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

You know what’s the worst thing about stress – at least in my opinion? Stress is a silent killer. It lurks and waits patiently for the right chance to tear you apart. The most terrible thing about stress is that oftentimes it goes by unnoticed to self (this is something I learned from the stress management seminar), and that’s when it can get most destructive. A stressed person can easily become disturbing to himself and others, but a stressed person in denial, even more so! If you feel as tough you’re building up too much stress, or if you see someone else engaging such patterns… maybe it’s best to try and do something about it.

Direct TV: cut the middleman, get all the fun!

Friday, June 19th, 2009

So, I was wondering… has any of you guys (and ladies) heard about directv? Apparently the sattelite Tv business is booming, since most people (myself included) are getting tired up putting up with cable companies, their lousy services and irrealistic prices. So apparently when it comes to watching television Direct tv is the thing to choose from nowadays… or so I’m told. I’m actually curious to know more about this service, so I’m wondering if anyone reading this has already tried it. Maybe you can share your experience via comments box? Thanks in advance!

I could repair the kitchen sink on my own, but..

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

I think this is a common plague with most home owners: postponing. There’s always something around a house that could use some fixin’: either it’s a broken fence, a dirty wall or a broken fixture… Invariably, all of us have something of the sort that could be repaired, and all the while time seems to drift by in months and years at a time before we actually take the initiative of getting it done. Myself, I’m really no shining example in this matter, I must confess; for example, my kitchen sink faucet has been leaking for a long while, and my actual kitchen sink could use some retirement. This is something that I always postpone until the next summer, and then until the next winter, and so on. I guess I’ve been thinking about that ever since I moved here, and yet I’ve never gotten past the thinking stage.

But today I’ve made up my mind do to something about it! So I’m looking around for kitchen sinks as well as the help of a skilled professional that will make a good job in setting up my new sink. This is something I feel I could do all by myself, but I’ve decided otherwise for two reasons: 1) it would probably take a while to get it right, and the wife wouldn’t be happy about that; and 2) the wife isn’t all too confident of my home improvement skills. Oh well, at least I’ve finally made up my mind to do away with that leaking faucet… although I’m a little worried I’ve gotten so used to that constant dripping sound, it my kitchen will feel just a little too quiet once the repairs are completed.

Dissolvable tobacco or potential health hazard?

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Smoking tobacco is a nasty habit – that goes without argument. With that in mind, I think it’s definitely a good thing the federal government has recently passed a new bill aimed at further hindering the sale of tobacco products. Well, the only problem is that tobacco companies aren’t giving up easily on their profit shares, so they’ve been coming up with new varieties of smoke-free tobaccos with the prospect of trying to go around the legislations. A good example is the latest line of tobacco strips, sticks and orbs from camel: all of which look very much like breath mints and chewing gums. In fact this might become a problem, since it provides a brand new – and highly discreet way – for kids to get into nicotine addiction. Granted, children can (and will) be prevented from buying these products, but all the while it’s a little worrying there are now such discreet ways to get a nicotine fix. Here, watch this video for further details:
